If you have not prepared for your retirement there is no time like the present to start saving. The sooner you identify the type of retirement you want, the better off you will be. Work out the things that are important to you and how much they will cost in the future (well beyond your retirement date). Then create an investment plan that will help you support that lifestyle for decades to come.

Five points for expats to consider:

  • You want to make sure you enjoy the benefits of a well-paid career when you retire. But you are not sure how, given all the financial turmoil.
  • You have made investments in a variety of assets and in different countries. How do you keep control of them against different tax regimes and widely varied national laws.
  • Global interest rates are mostly very low. Saving into interest rate investments is unlikely to protect your wealth against inflation. What other choices are there?
  • You accept that there is a degree of risk in any investment but you need your finance to be managed by a safe pair of hands.
  • You want to consolidate your investments in a secure and stable location and in a choice of currencies.
  • About minimum of 15% of salary should be direct to retirement funding from outside of working career.

  • Be clear about your objectives and ask yourself what you want when you retire. For example, you may need a certain amount to continue your current standard of living, you may want to take annual holidays, or perhaps you would like to maintain an annual membership to your Golf Club.
  • Increased life expectancy and more active lifestyles mean that your income will have to stretch over a longer period , you could quite possibly need an income for 30 or even 40 years after you retire.
  • Prices won’t stop rising, so an investment plan is crucial to prepare for decades of rising costs.
  • Don’t put off the inevitable.
